BIOTECH COMPANIES

Posted by admin on November 26, 2007

Many biotech companies are working toward finding cures for disease by developing medications for treatment. Some of these companies have evolved from students in college making profound discoveries and others are backed by investors. A few of the more prominent biotech companies are Alteon, Inc., AmpliMed, Inc., Callisto Pharmaceuticals Inc., Kinexis, Inc., Trellis Bioscience, Inc., and The Vaccine Company.

Alteon Inc. has one focus and that is to develop a drug to reverse or slow diseases of aging and complications from diabetes. They performed research on the pathological process and inevitable consequence of aging, which is responsible for many medical disorders like cardiovascular, kidney disease, and more. Currently, they have a drug in the clinical trial phase called Alagebrium Chloride.

AmpliMed Inc. is a relatively new biotechnology company, which focuses on the development of therapeutic agents for cancer. The company has two leading drug candidates in the process of being approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA); Imexon and AMP-53. The FDA has approved Imexon and the drug is currently in clinical development.

Callisto Pharmaceuticals Inc. is another one of the many biotech companies and their focus is treating multiple myeloma, which is a blood cancer. Other similar diseases are being looked at like osteoporosis. The drug under clinical trials developed by Callisto is called Atiprimod.

Trellis Bioscience’s initial focus is in the discovery and development of cancer therapeutics. They have a new hopeful breakthrough in technology discovering the optimization of peptide therapeutics, which inhibits protein interactions. Currently, they do not have a drug yet but they are working diligently in the development process.

The Vaccine Company is focusing on a cancer vaccination, which will be used for leukemia and myelodysplasia. The drug is called the PR1 vaccine and is currently being tested on patients at the Anderson Cancer Center. It is showing to have a survival advantage for patients who have been administered the drug. The drug is in phase one and two of the clinical trial period.

There are many biotech companies that are working hard to find cures for diseases from which we have suffered for decades without treatment. Many of the drugs being produced look promising for our future and that of humankind as a whole.
